Emerald is one of the most rare of all gemstones and this makes it one of the most expensive gems as well. Good quality Natural Emerald is extremely rare and so are Emerald specimens. Probably more than 99% of all cut faceted Emerald gemstones set in commercial jewelry are Lab Created Emerald and are not natural. To be on the safe side, Natural Emeralds should be bought as loose stones and then made into jewelry. This is the only way you will be sure about the weight, clarity, origin and treatment of the natural stone.

Emeralds range in deep blue green, Green and light green. Emeralds are mined in Brazil, Columbia, India, Africa and Pakistan. Most Emeralds are oil-treated, except for the emeralds coming out of technologically backward areas like Northern Pakistan. The oil used in treatment is transparent and colorless and is filled and set into the natural fractures/cavities of the Emeralds. This process makes them look more transparent and nice looking. However, emeralds must not be washed with detergents because the oil will flow out and a nice looking emerald may start looking rather ugly.
