Citrine is a beautiful yellow gemstone, which is becoming more and more scarce by the year. It is found in light yellow color to bright golden yellow color. Natural citrine may have natural color banding. Natural citrines also have natural inclusions like healing fractures, especially big gems have high probability to show some natural inclusions.

Beware of the rich golden yellow citrines that you see in the market because those are are not natural. The synthetic citrines are rich golden orangy color. Such a color is not natural and is a give away for a syntheic citrine. Also synthetic citrine gems have no natural inclusions, even in the biggest gems, which indicates a synthetic origin. Try buying a few big synthetic gems and see it yourself. At Gemological Association of Australia, my collegues and I have tested many citrine gemstones that I bought from a famous gem merchant in Melbourne (I am not going to name him) and found that those gems were synthetic. Synthetic citrine may have very fine black powder like inclusions when seen with a 10x or under a microscope. This powder is unmelted powder from which the syntheic citrine is manufactured.
